BarokkiKuopio Young Artists of the Year presents a concert curated by the Slovenian flautist Marjana Jocif. Flute sonatas by Johan Helmich Roman (an 18th century composer of Finnish origins) are combined with pieces from various popular collections of the Baroque period, such as Division Flute by John Walsh, Il trattado de glosas by Diego Ortiz, and Pièces de viole, Livre II by M. Marais. The pieces are diminutions, ornamented and augmented versions of popular themes, based on grounds, repetitive bass ostinatos and chord progressions. Much like the twelve-bar blues, open for jamming upon, the ground can be seen as a well-known foundation for creating new music either by composition or improvisation.
BarokkiKuopio Young Artists of the Year:
Marjana Jocif, recorder
Jasper Koekoek, harpsichord
Teuvo Taimioja, baroque guitar and teorbi
The event is accessible, more information at Puijo Church's website.

The wedding ceremony was held in Vienna, home of the bride Maria Josepha, with music from Antonio Caldara among others. From Vienna the wedding party travelled to Dresden on ships where live musicians were hired to entertain the travellers, such as the lutist Sylvius Leopold Weiss. At their destination the wedding was celebrated for almost a month, with guests such as Georg Philipp Telemann and Georg Friedrich Händel. The party included daily performances of instrumental music and operas from various composers, all combined with the theme of planets and their corresponding gods (eg. Mars - the god of war). KUOPIO TOWN HALL, TULLIPORTINKATU 31

Throughout history, artists have been enthusiastic travellers and cultural tourists. Many of the composers and musiciand of the 17th and 18th century actively travelled around Europe, exchanging new trends and seeking inspiration from other countries’ musical styles. Royal courts and cities hired musicians to perform at various occasions, and a hint of international influence was always especially exciting and fashionable. The concert program revolves around the music of various cosmopolitans, especially Giovanni Benedetto Platti (1697– 1763) and Giuseppe Antonio Brescianello (1690– 1758), who both originated from Italy and made their career in Germany. Despite their similar origins, they ended up building quite different musical palettes: while Brescianello’s music has elements of Italian liveliness, German polyphony and French elegance, Platti’s music is a combination of hearty Italian roots and a glimpse of the galant Empfindsamer Stil of the German Late Baroque era.
Katariina Malmberg, baroque oboe
Kaisa Ruotsalainen, baroque violin
Anna Pulakka, baroque cello
Sanni Antikainen, harpsichord

echoes from the karelian holy days
SAT, JULY 19TH, 3:00 PM
orthodox church museum riisa, karjalankatu 1
Free entrance, outdoor concert at the bells of the museum. In case of rain the concert will be moved indoors.
Entrance fee to the museum's exhibition 10 / 8 €, more information at www.riisa.fi
For centuries, bells have been an essential part of ecclesiastical rituals: holy days, weddings, public announcements, and ceremonies of both new beginnings and mourning. To honor BarokkiKuopio’s anniversary we will present a rare combination: richly toned Orthodox church bells and the Finnish traditional instrument jouhikko. The concert celebrates this enchanting soundscape while investigating the interaction and influences of the Karelian folk music tradition and Orthodox music. Karelian jouhikko players of the 19th century were surrounded by Orthodox culture while they travelled between cities and villages to play at dance events of the common. Vladimir Belov, a percussionist specialized in bells, and the jouhikko virtuoso Ilkka Heinonen perform a concert of both traditional music and improvisation, contemplating the impact of church bells and religious melodies on the travelling jouhikko player’s style. Could spiritual songs find their way into this mundane, if not profane instrument?
Ilkka Heinonen, jouhikko
Vladimir Belov, bells
The event is accessible. Note! Limited amount of seats available, kindly prepare to enjoy the concert standing.

FLOS is an interdisciplinary concert concept, brought to life by Aino Peltomaa‘s Ensemble Gamut! in collaboration with visual artist Vappu Rossi and sound artist Tuomas Norvio. The theme of the performance centers on endangered flower species from the Arctic. Vappu Rossi creates large-scale, live-drawn artworks inspired by the flowers and Ensemble Gamut!’s music. Sound artist Tuomas Norvio produces real-time sound from Rossi’s drawing tools, giving the emerging forms of the flowers an audible presence for the audience. Thus, endangered or already extinct arctic flowers appear to come to life in real time, surrounding the audience, intertwining with the musical soundscape of voice, harp, bells, Karelian bowed lyres, medieval blockflutes and electronic soundscapes. The project explores the boundary between living and non-living, what is alive and what is already extinct. In addition to medieval flower-themed melodies, Aino Peltomaa’s own compositions and lyrics about endangered arctic flowers bridge the material together, echoing the immaterial epochs of our environment, our home. Already lost, rediscovered. Destroyed, vanished, rescued.

BarokkiKuopio’s favorite orchestra Ensemble Nylandia brings the party to the festival’s final concert with a special program and line-up: coronation music by Purcell and Händel complemented by a vocal consort and the trumpet, the most festive of instruments!
Coronation anthems were written to accompany lengthy coronation ceremonies of monarchs. After receiving English nationality, Händel wrote four anthems for the coronation of George II, where the king and queen are recognized as sovereign rulers in the eyes of the people and God. The anthems celebrate the new monarch, but also declare political and ecclesiastical power. With his compositions, Händel pledged his allegiance and also presented his skill of adopting the core of the English anthem, coined by Purcell and others: simultaneously grandiose and simple music for public spectacles.
In addition to the anthems, Bach Collegium Helsinki will participate with celebratory music by Johann Sebastian Bach. As a counterpoint to all the extroverted declaration we will also enjoy the meditative atmosphere of the Estonian master Arvo Pärt in honor of his 90th anniversary.
