The slightly goose-like, crumhorn-tinged edge of the Baroque bassoon is rock in every situation.” – Marjo Heiskanen BarokkiKuopio’s traditional Late-Night Club! Once again, Ensemble Nylandia’s dazzling and streamlined rock ensemble Tavallinen peili takes the stage, performing the greatest hits from the 15th to the 21st century. At this party, music by Sebastian Ravus (Under the Sea), Berlin (Take My Breath Away), and finnish legend Irwin (Ei tippa tapa) all coexist in perfect harmony. What happens when a 17th-century Savonian hunter falls into a magical stream and finds himself in the year 2026? How did a bow and a crown end up on the coat of arms of Kuopio?
This year’s BarokkiKuopio family fairytale concert takes the audience on a time-travelling journey across centuries, following the adventures of Niilo-Taneli Savolainen, a hunter from ancient times, as he navigates the modern world. Along the way, we hear a different kind of story about the origins of Kuopio’s coat of arms.
Interwoven with the tale is early music from both the heartlands of Savo and Baroque-era composers including Handel, Telemann, Lully, Boismortier, Conti, Landi, and Stradella.

Musicians Laura Ollberg-Ekman and Sini Vahervuo first met over twenty years ago at a summer course in early music organised by the Helsinki Early Music Society (CMAH), and since then they have played together in many different ensembles. Now the duo of friends returns to its roots with a programme featuring music by two major German Baroque composers, Johann Sebastian Bach and Georg Friedrich Händel. Johann Sebastian Bach composed six sonatas for violin and harpsichord, probably between 1720 and 1723. All of them are in trio sonata form, written for two treble voices and a bass line. In this concert, we hear two of these sonatas in arrangements for recorder and harpsichord. In these works, the role of the harpsichord is not the typical Baroque basso continuo, but rather an equal melodic voice written for the right hand, while the left hand plays the bass line. Bach’s works are framed by music by Georg Friedrich Händel. The programme includes, among others, an arrangement of his variation set originally written for harpsichord, The Harmonious Blacksmith, composed in 1720, around the same time as the Bach works featured in this concert. The concert is part of the Cathedral’s Summer Evening Music series Kesän iltamusiikit. Some of Baroque music’s most beloved classics are often heard in commercials, hotel bars, fine dining restaurants, and as background music in films and TV series—sometimes watered down into harmless elevator-music versions, overly sentimental interpretations, or vague ethereal soundscapes. But not this time. In this evening concert, works such as Albinoni’s Adagio and Bach’s Air will be heard in all their original brilliance and with the respect they deserve. These famous Baroque works have not survived as “hits” because they work well as background music in a dentist’s waiting room, but because they contain something so unique that they continue to speak to listeners centuries after they were composed. This concert celebrates that essence and places these beloved masterpieces centre stage, performed with expertise, passion, and care by Ensemble Nylandia under the direction of Baroque specialist Matias Häkkinen. People around the world have personal experiences with the recorder, and those experiences are often quite ambivalent. Yet the recorder is not just the plastic instrument played at school — it has a rich history and a fascinating present. It may well be the most misunderstood instrument in the world. In his Recorder Guru performance, Eero Saunamäki reveals the secrets of the recorder from the Middle Ages to the present day. The stage features a wide range of recorders, whose captivating sounds are enriched by inspiring stories about the instrument’s history, the music performed, and the artist’s own experiences as a professional player of this rare instrument. The audience will encounter medieval jesters, Central European courts, the recorder’s golden age in the early 18th century, as well as modern perceptions of the recorder as both a school and contemporary instrument. Ilkka Eronen, flutes Specialising in Baroque and Renaissance wooden transverse flutes (traverso), wind player Ilkka Eronen presents a solo concert featuring music spanning approximately four centuries on four different flutes. The performance takes the audience on a fascinating journey through the rich and nuanced sound worlds of wooden flutes. The programme includes both works originally written for flute and a selection of arrangements that highlight the deeply expressive and softly resonant sound of the traverso. As at any summer celebration, the wind may carry away napkins, topple roll-ups, and wasps insist on diving into glasses of juice—and eventually it may rain, but that won’t stop the music. Together, the festival artists create the atmosphere of a perfect summer day in a concert where the music truly flows.
The garden is mostly lawn; you are welcome to bring your own picnic blanket or other seating. During the event, you can also enjoy the delights of the garden café.
We also warmly recommend visiting the VB Photographic Centre’s exhibition. This summer’s exhibition is A View From the Side by Lars Tunbjörk. His images, with their “bright light, precise composition, and subtle humour, reveal the strangeness and humanity of everyday situations.”

Currents of Affects – A European Journey celebrates our shared European cultural heritage and invites audiences to explore the vivid world of Baroque music, shaped by cultural exchange and collective imagination. The music we hear represents a living tradition: flexible, adaptable, and constantly in motion—much like the society in which it emerged.
Baroque music is one of the earliest and clearest examples of a truly European culture: a network built not on uniformity but on the exchange of ideas, influences, and practices. Under the direction of renowned baroque oboist Alfredo Bernardini, the outstanding musicians of EUBO bring this rich musical heritage to life in captivating performance.
